Hunting guides have been important in many areas of the world, including the American west, the Adirondacks, and Africa, etc. Hunting guides in Africa of European descent are commonly referred to as White hunter, although this is becoming a less fashionable term these days, as in most African countries today there are also native African "hunters" or hunting guides.

Big Game Hunting

Big game hunting is the hunting of large game. The term is historically associated with the hunting of Africa's Big Five game (lion, the African elephant, the Cape Buffalo, the leopard and the rhinoceros), and with tigers and rhinos on the Indian subcontinent. In North America, animals such as bears and bison were hunted. Most of these species are protected now, but other species such as kudu, antelope, hartebeest, moose, elk, and deer are still hunted. Big game hunting occurs in places such as Argentina, New Zealand, Canada, many parts of the USA, and in many parts of Africa.

Trophy Hunting

Trophy hunting is the selective hunting of wild game animals. Although parts of the slain animal may be kept as a hunting trophy or memorial (usually the skin, antlers and/or head), the carcass itself is sometimes used as food. Trophy hunting has firm supporters and opponents. Public debate about trophy hunting often centres on the question of the morality of sport hunting and the question of the extent to which the money paid by trophy hunters benefits the population of game animals and the local economy. Trophy hunting should not be confused with poaching, the practice of taking game illegally.
